How Hypnotherapy works

Hypnotherapy is a process when the conscious and the unconscious mind are in agreement, placing you in a trance and facilitating a shift in consciousness to occur. When this happens your therapeutic change can begin.

Hypnotherapy works to remove distress and thus create new subconscious thought and positive behaviour.  By uncovering your negative subconscious thoughts, and then reframe them into the positive thoughts to help with solutions to your problem or habit.

Sessions are tailored to your individual needs and how to facilitate the healing process.

Hypnotherapy speaks directly to the subconscious mind, which is a supple and powerful tool, and creates the possibility for change by creating an opportunity for new neural pathways to be developed. Suggestion allows the subconscious mind to understand that new types of thought and behaviour are possible, and to help the client realise that they have options on how to feel and think where previously they felt completely option-less.

This extract might help explain it

The human brain is more supple and complex than a physical pathway in a forest, and as new paths are formed in the brain old paths can be progressively discarded and forgotten. This manifests as changes in behaviour, where people can change habits.

Generally as babies and children we all changed the physical habit of crawling by learning to walk, and the emotional habit of sucking our thumb by learning to feel stronger and less afraid by the worries of life. This happens when our developing brains grow new neural pathways, allowing for new types of behaviour to become available to us. In a similar way Hypnotherapy gives us new options and new ways of seeing the world which we hadn't thought about before. These tools allow us to reconsider our responses to stimuli and to change accordingly.

If an adult is still sucking their thumb at 21 years old they would have a very deeply ingrained neural pathway about how they deal with stress and the worries of life. They might take many sessions to change their emotional thought & behaviour processes. But I believe that even they would find that hypnotherapy would be able to help them see their world in a different way, and that this could help them to achieve some relief and positive change.

I hope that this helps clarify what I meant about hypnotherapy. For further information you might like to look at some articles on the Australian Hypnotherapists Association website at

I’d like to spend our first session really coming to understand the situation for you, what’s not working for you and what outcomes you’d like to achieve.

In this session I need to completely identify with who you are now so that together we can then make it possible for you to become the person you truly want to be. We will also do some hypnosis in the first session to give you a taste of what it’s like and to start the healing process.

In subsequent sessions we will be able to really develop and refine your strategy to change and use hypnosis to release blockages and to create new ways for you to achieve your goals. It will actually be quite fun and I look forward to working on this with you.

My hypnotherapy sessions include counselling to discuss the circumstances of your dilemma and to help you understand the dynamics at play and then work your way through them. However traditional counselling doesn't generally provide answers to your concerns or facilitate changes in your behavior. Instead the act of exchanging opinions and ideas with the counsellor is meant to help the client to come to their own conclusions and answers.

What does it feel like?

Hypnotherapy is a relaxed state of focused awareness. As you go into a trance you will feel your body relax and your mind let go of all tension and stress, but you will remain responsive and will be able to hear and react as you chose throughout the experience. As you begin to relax into a trance you will feel a sensation that is very much like the feeling of comfort you get right before you drift into sleep.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Hypnosis is a natural state of being and most people can be hypnotised.  All that is required is the ability to follow voice instructions. This powerful yet gentle tool can be used to assist anyone aged 8 and upwards.

How deep into trance will I go?

You will naturally go to the level of trance that is optimal for you to achieve the results you want.  There are three main depths of trance:

Light – body relaxed, where your hearing can expand to hear all the sounds around you;
Medium – body relaxed, where you listen only to the sound of my voice;
Deep – the most profound level of relaxation, where you become unaware of the  sounds around you or on focusing on any one thought.

Is Hypnotherapy the same as stage hypnotism?

My goal as a fully qualified hypnotherapist is to facilitate change in you to help you achieve your goals.

Stage hypnotists are performers and their only goal is to entertain their audience and with hypnotherapy both stage and therapeutic it is important to note that you will never do anything against your own will or morals.
